How long have you been teaching financial education?
Four years
Why do you teach financial education?
I teach financial education because it is something that is not discussed in the households of many of my students. I strive to prepare my students academically and financially for the real world with the knowledge and experience I share with them.
How is this different from other courses you have taught?
In the past, I only taught what was within the standards for economics. Oftentimes, I had to find my own resources or share with other teachers, but with this curriculum, it felt great to have something that was already outlined for both the teachers and the students.
What do students like most about the course?
The information presented to them was very informative. It allowed us to have a lot of great discussions as they are planning for life after high school.
How does your school fit a single-semester course into its curriculum?
Since financial education is such a strong need, I asked my principal if we could change the content of one of our electives so it could be offered to our senior and junior students. I had to condense some activities a bit to fit the time constraints.
Were there any challenges to implementing?
Pacing was a bit tough since we were not fully familiar with the content in the beginning. Now that we are familiar with the setup, it is easier for us to implement in a way that fits the needs of the students.
Do you have any implementation tips or successes that you want to share with others?
I personally enjoyed the discussions the information brought forth with my students. I would suggest to embrace the opportunities for the students to ask questions.
