How long have you been teaching financial education?
Two years
Why do you teach financial education?
I am the mother of two adult children. After watching them struggle with "adulting," I realized that financial education was something I could help my students with. I love the way the finEDge program has the students identify their values, attitudes, influencers, and how much of a risk taker they are before talking about anything else. Students that are armed with this information will be empowered in the future. I am very happy to be able to be engaged with this program.
How is this different from other courses you have taught?
Every lesson is crafted with students in mind and the daily activities really do help bring a sense of community to the classroom. The articles are current, and as a teacher with many preps, this really helps me stay on top of my game in the classroom.
What do students like most about the course?
The students enjoy the conversations and seeing the results of the digital tools. Learning about FICO scores and the impact on their borrowing power was probably one of the most impactful lessons. This class is something that students can use later in life.
How does your school fit a single-semester course into its curriculum?
I am currently teaching it in my Adult Living class. It is a wonderful fit.
Were there any challenges to implementing?
This is the second year that I will be utilizing finEDge. I must admit, the first year took some work and time to fully understand and familiarize myself with the materials. It was well worth the time I invested into the program. Think of it as an investment in your students. The second time around, I feel so much more confident. Just give yourself the time to work through it.
