How long have you been teaching financial education?
2 years
Why do you teach financial education?
I fell in love with accounting and subsequently business education in high school. Now, I get to help others fall in love with learning how to manage money and financial decisions more effectively.
How is this different from other courses you have taught?
Financial education classes are very much more 'real time - real life' for the students. The 'theory' can be put into practice immediately.
What do students like most about the course?
Students really like the scenarios in the workbooks and they like how the workbooks are arranged. They also like the charts and graphics a lot.
How does your school fit a single-semester course into its curriculum?
This is accomplished by being very focused (i.e., well planned scope and sequence) and using instructional time very carefully.
Were there any challenges to implementing?
Initially, it was a challenge for me to become knowledgeable with the curriculum to maximize my lesson plans for the students, since I had never used it before. Gladly, the curriculum was easy to understand and very well written. It has an excellent balance of teacher presentation time and student work / direct involvement time!
Do you have any implementation tips or successes that you want to share with others?
Line up the teacher guides in order and quickly pour over every one so that an unofficial scope and sequence of the material can be developed in the teacher's mind. This will give a teacher who is new to the material an idea of where the instruction is starting and where it is going. It will also give any business education teacher a good 'jolt' of excitement, because the material is so well written and planned out.
